Let’s Talk Again (Poem)

Once, it was okay to argue back,

we said, sheltered beneath icy waves,

our hearts producing life, so warm,

against collared shirts and dark-rimmed skirts

We would talk over tea, over black and wide print,

yes, no, I disagree

opinion was valued and tradition upheld

decency, was what it was

Now, we talk online and you bite,

you sink teeth into the arm of your opponent,

I am wrong and you are right,

the online world declares,

The wave moves in, against the tide,

swallowing those on the shore,

our sandy toes are stung by the salt,

existing in the surge

let’s talk again, I say,

another day, where

we can be people,

decent, respectful, people.
